The Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) have launched a joint initiative to work together to strengthen geographic education in Canada by building a coalition of organizations and associations committed to effecting positive change. As a first step, we are holding a meeting on August 9th and 10th of this year in St. John’s, Newfoundland, just prior to the Annual Meeting of the CAG.
The objectives of this meeting are to:
- Generate a lively discussion of Geography and its importance to Canada and Canadians,
- Gather a range of opinions and perspectives,
- Learn of successful approaches in other countries that offer models for Canada,
- Build a broad constituency of support for an increased emphasis on geographic literacy and education in Canada, and
- Draft a declaration, statement of principles and commitment to action that can be endorsed by the CAG and RCGS initially and other groups and organizations.
Following the meeting, committed individuals and organizations will promote and use the declaration to generate interest and mobilize support for strengthening geographic education in Canada.
